I wanted to do something about FGM in Egypt, because nobody knows about it – very few people at least. And for me, Egypt was a very good example for why it is so hard to fight the practice. It’s a taboo subject. The problem with Egypt as well is, that it’s a dictatorship. There is basically no action on the field. NGO’s have no freedom to do anything. And the traditions are still really anchored in society. Egypt is one of the countries where it’s the most widely spread, but yet with the least initiatives. The first time I came to Egypt I wanted to highlight something more positive. The initiatives, actions, the way the mentality is changing. After a few weeks I actually realized there are no initiatives – nothing. So I had to rethink: How could I highlight the change of mentality when there is no action. That is why I turned towards portraits women who chose to abandon the tradition. It’s still a work in progress. It’s incomplete. Description An account of the resource Work in progress ​ ​ We often tend to restrain Female Genital Mutilation to Subsaharan countries, unaware that the practice actually appeared first in Egypt in pharaonic times, while today 90% of the women aged 15-65 are still victims of circumcision. The khitan-“purification” in Arabic-is now a practice deeply rooted in the social fabric of the country, indifferent of social or religious background. Although the phenomenon has slightly decreased the last decade, the political turmoil and the weight of traditions relying on religious arguments are preventing the implementation of concrete initiatives with real impact. ​ My project therefore focuses on where actual change did occur; it focuses on women who took the decision to not perpetrate the practice despite social pressure. In the process, each woman becomes an activist at her own level. With the lack of effective “top to bottom”efforts, it's important to highlight stories of hope at the roots of society. ​ The project evolves around a series of portraits of these survivors of FGM, depicted with their daughters whom they refused to circumcise. Far from being the passive victims as whom they are usually depicted as, these survivors of FGM have used their own traumatic experience to create positive change. The portraits are a celebration of a possibility of progress, while pointing out the difficulties of the fight and the possible ways to overcome them. She was circumcised one day after school, when she was 12 years old. She doesn’t have much memories of it, but says she’s still deeply traumatized by the violence of the event. She got married at a young age, and gave birth to six kids. Two of them died during the delivery. Consequences of FGM are indeed going way beyond psychological trauma, since obstetrical complications can occur to the victims, such as post-partum hemorrhage, need of episiotomy, tearing of the tissues or flesh, while the rate of death among new born babies is higher. At the time, the discourse was already saturated with conversations and projects about sexual harassment, but Anis decided to take a different approach to the topic by making it more intimate with real stories. As a man, it was naturally more difficult to approach the topic and to attempt to unravel intimate details about women's closets, but he started with relying on his immediate circles, which helped a lot. If you find a society where people cannot wear what they want I believe that they also cannot talk and think about all what they want or do not want.​The idea came to me after so many stories and complaints that i hear from a lot of close female friends about their dreams in wearing dresses and their sadness in storing their nice clothes and not wearing it because of the fear of the street and society. I wanted to do something about FGM in Egypt, because nobody knows about it – very few people at least. And for me, Egypt was a very good example for why it is so hard to fight the practice. It’s a taboo subject. The problem with Egypt as well is, that it’s a dictatorship. There is basically no action on the field. NGO’s have no freedom to do anything. And the traditions are still really anchored in society. Egypt is one of the countries where it’s the most widely spread, but yet with the least initiatives. The first time I came to Egypt I wanted to highlight something more positive. The initiatives, actions, the way the mentality is changing. After a few weeks I actually realized there are no initiatives – nothing. So I had to rethink: How could I highlight the change of mentality when there is no action. That is why I turned towards portraits women who chose to abandon the tradition. It’s still a work in progress. It’s incomplete. Description An account of the resource Work in progress ​ ​ We often tend to restrain Female Genital Mutilation to Subsaharan countries, unaware that the practice actually appeared first in Egypt in pharaonic times, while today 90% of the women aged 15-65 are still victims of circumcision. The khitan-“purification” in Arabic-is now a practice deeply rooted in the social fabric of the country, indifferent of social or religious background. Although the phenomenon has slightly decreased the last decade, the political turmoil and the weight of traditions relying on religious arguments are preventing the implementation of concrete initiatives with real impact. ​ My project therefore focuses on where actual change did occur; it focuses on women who took the decision to not perpetrate the practice despite social pressure. In the process, each woman becomes an activist at her own level. With the lack of effective “top to bottom”efforts, it's important to highlight stories of hope at the roots of society. ​ The project evolves around a series of portraits of these survivors of FGM, depicted with their daughters whom they refused to circumcise. Far from being the passive victims as whom they are usually depicted as, these survivors of FGM have used their own traumatic experience to create positive change. The portraits are a celebration of a possibility of progress, while pointing out the difficulties of the fight and the possible ways to overcome them. Title A name given to the resource Mariana, Yoanna and Febroina – Mallawi, Upper Egypt Mariana was circumcised on the same day as her sister and a dozen of young girls taken to the same house, one day after school. There, they were circumcised one after the other by a local da’ya (a village midwife). « Everybody was screaming, some girls tried running away… It was absolutely awful, and we weren’t even told what was happening except that it was for our own good ! » But a decade ago, Father Aghethaton, the coptic priest of the village, started militating against that practice. Through preaches at the church, awareness sessions and discussions with the mothers of the village, he slowly started eradicating that practice. His successor is now following his path, while almost half of the women of that community has supposedly abandoned the practice. Social pressure and religious arguments are often the two main barriers to the eradication of FGM. Title A name given to the resource Marsa and Barbara Anna –El Bashra, Upper Egypt Marsa also comes from a Coptic community, where circumcision is still widely spread. When she was inflicted with FGM at a young age, she suffered from severe bleeding, and had to remain in bed for more than a week. Complications such as infections, HIV or severe bleedings are common in such rurale areas where FGM is practiced with non sterilized razor blades or knives. Tales of women being told to sit in buckets of hot water to heal the wound is also regularly recalled, attesting of the absolute lack of medical attention these young girls receive. While growing up, Marsa couldn’t get rid of the trauma and the fear of that event. Thankfully, women in her village were slowly giving up on that tradition following the public discourses of the local priest taking position against that practice. Description An account of the resource SAYEDA is a photographic work about women in Egypt. I travelled to Egypt on various occasions to do portraits and interviews with women from different walks of life. Many people in Egypt fight against violations of human, and in particular, women´s rights. In my work, I approached Egyptian women from different social environments whose position in society depends on religion, education, age and socio-economic situation. This work explores the issue of what it means to be a woman in egypt today. I am so thankful to all women I had the great pleasure to meet, listen to and learn from! I received a grant from the german foundation “VG Bild Kunst” for this project. I like to encounter foreign worlds to learn about other cultures and people. Photography offers an opportunity, a way in. As a photographer, I am interested in the individual circumstances of people or different groups in the population; often these are people who live on the periphery of society or as a minority, either because of their jobs, their religion or life situation. When the Arab Spring broke out in 2011 and the affected countries were in the media spotlight, I became more concerned with current events and began reading lots of newspaper pieces. Around the same time in 2012, I read a pivotal article written by Egyptian-American journalist and feminist Mona El Tahawy “Why do they hate us?“ which addresses misogyny in Islam. It was like being electrified. I wanted to understand more, and so decided to travel to Egypt to get to know the world of these women: their daily routines, their wishes, dreams and concerns. I wanted to know how differences in social position, religion, education, age and class defined the scope of their lives. The reports about the rapes at Tahrir Square in 2012 and 2013 convinced me of the necessity of this plan. Preparing for the series was sometimes tedious and tough. Luckily, I had friends in Cairo who could tell me a lot about the country and who opened up a lot of doors for me. Films and books, news and newspaper reports provided more information on how Egyptian society developed over the last fifty years and how it runs today. When I received the grant from VG Bild Kunst for the project, the whole thing became much more concrete and I could finally plan the trip. Description An account of the resource SAYEDA is a photographic work about women in Egypt. I travelled to Egypt on various occasions to do portraits and interviews with women from different walks of life. Many people in Egypt fight against violations of human, and in particular, women´s rights. In my work, I approached Egyptian women from different social environments whose position in society depends on religion, education, age and socio-economic situation. This work explores the issue of what it means to be a woman in egypt today. I am so thankful to all women I had the great pleasure to meet, listen to and learn from! I received a grant from the german foundation “VG Bild Kunst” for this project. I was also award the “Grenzgänger” Scholarship from the Literarisches Colloqium Berlin and the Robert Bosch Foundation, and this work was supported by the Goethe Institute in Cairo. I like to encounter foreign worlds to learn about other cultures and people. Photography offers an opportunity, a way in. As a photographer, I am interested in the individual circumstances of people or different groups in the population; often these are people who live on the periphery of society or as a minority, either because of their jobs, their religion or life situation. When the Arab Spring broke out in 2011 and the affected countries were in the media spotlight, I became more concerned with current events and began reading lots of newspaper pieces. Around the same time in 2012, I read a pivotal article written by Egyptian-American journalist and feminist Mona El Tahawy “Why do they hate us?“ which addresses misogyny in Islam. It was like being electrified. I wanted to understand more, and so decided to travel to Egypt to get to know the world of these women: their daily routines, their wishes, dreams and concerns. I wanted to know how differences in social position, religion, education, age and class defined the scope of their lives. The reports about the rapes at Tahrir Square in 2012 and 2013 convinced me of the necessity of this plan. Preparing for the series was sometimes tedious and tough. Luckily, I had friends in Cairo who could tell me a lot about the country and who opened up a lot of doors for me. Films and books, news and newspaper reports provided more information on how Egyptian society developed over the last fifty years and how it runs today. When I received the grant from VG Bild Kunst for the project, the whole thing became much more concrete and I could finally plan the trip. Then in digital, she started the aerial series “At 36000 Feet” of the Southwest American deserts and more of her community projects, with particular environment, history, identity and issues that have been shown in many different exhibitions in many cities in the US and Europe, like Italy, Germany, Spain. I wished to lose it, to live without it. It started as a private group on Facebook. Together, a group of women share our feelings and personal stories. Then we meet in person. We discuss what it means to be living with all these pressures, simply because we own this body. We talk about how each of us discovered what it means to be a woman. Faces turn red, tears start rolling and at that moment of openness a magical bond between us is born. From their words I take some time and start visualizing how the image of their story might look. After I photographed the women, I noticed a change. Two women decide to show their faces in the images, something they previously resisted. They do not care about the consequences; they feel liberated. Storytelling is a way to heal, to free ourselves from the weight of experience. The women who found the strength to stand and speak in front of the camera, this is the real gift. It gives me the strength to photograph and I hope it will give other women who are still silent the strength to open the door. Description An account of the resource SAYEDA is a photographic work about women in Egypt. I travelled to Egypt on various occasions to do portraits and interviews with women from different walks of life. Many people in Egypt fight against violations of human, and in particular, women´s rights. In my work, I approached Egyptian women from different social environments whose position in society depends on religion, education, age and socio-economic situation. This work explores the issue of what it means to be a woman in egypt today. I am so thankful to all women I had the great pleasure to meet, listen to and learn from! I received a grant from the german foundation “VG Bild Kunst” for this project. I was also award the “Grenzgänger” Scholarship from the Literarisches Colloqium Berlin and the Robert Bosch Foundation, and this work was supported by the Goethe Institute in Cairo. I like to encounter foreign worlds to learn about other cultures and people. Photography offers an opportunity, a way in. As a photographer, I am interested in the individual circumstances of people or different groups in the population; often these are people who live on the periphery of society or as a minority, either because of their jobs, their religion or life situation. When the Arab Spring broke out in 2011 and the affected countries were in the media spotlight, I became more concerned with current events and began reading lots of newspaper pieces. Around the same time in 2012, I read a pivotal article written by Egyptian-American journalist and feminist Mona El Tahawy “Why do they hate us?“ which addresses misogyny in Islam. It was like being electrified. I wanted to understand more, and so decided to travel to Egypt to get to know the world of these women: their daily routines, their wishes, dreams and concerns. I wanted to know how differences in social position, religion, education, age and class defined the scope of their lives. The reports about the rapes at Tahrir Square in 2012 and 2013 convinced me of the necessity of this plan. Preparing for the series was sometimes tedious and tough. Luckily, I had friends in Cairo who could tell me a lot about the country and who opened up a lot of doors for me. Films and books, news and newspaper reports provided more information on how Egyptian society developed over the last fifty years and how it runs today. When I received the grant from VG Bild Kunst for the project, the whole thing became much more concrete and I could finally plan the trip. She believes that art should also be a constant process of experimentation. She decided to do a photo series based on the idea of collage: combining different elements to magnify the story. Description An account of the resource Ever since I was young girl I was constantly reminded by mother that being a girl is a liability and burden. I need to be extra careful of my actions. I cannot stay out late - what people would say about me? Even when I got divorced I was reminded by my family: “Be careful, you are a girl.” We live all our life guarding our body. You have to get married before you become too old to bear children. You have to preserve your figure to stay desirable. You have to you have to... Entrapped in this body I resented it. I wished to lose it, to live without it. It started as a private group on Facebook. Together, a group of women share our feelings and personal stories. Then we meet in person. We discuss what it means to be living with all these pressures, simply because we own this body. We talk about how each of us discovered what it means to be a woman. Faces turn red, tears start rolling and at that moment of openness a magical bond between us is born. From their words I take some time and start visualizing how the image of their story might look. After I photographed the women, I noticed a change. Two women decide to show their faces in the images, something they previously resisted. They do not care about the consequences; they feel liberated. Storytelling is a way to heal, to free ourselves from the weight of experience. The women who found the strength to stand and speak in front of the camera, this is the real gift. It gives me the strength to photograph and I hope it will give other women who are still silent the strength to open the door. How she was a part of the family, but not quite. Seeing the large socioeconomics gaps in Egyptian society, Lina was motivated to speak with her friends' housekeepers, especially those who have stayed with the same family for over 5 years - commonplace in Egyptian homes. I like to encounter foreign worlds to learn about other cultures and people. Photography offers an opportunity, a way in. As a photographer, I am interested in the individual circumstances of people or different groups in the population; often these are people who live on the periphery of society or as a minority, either because of their jobs, their religion or life situation. When the Arab Spring broke out in 2011 and the affected countries were in the media spotlight, I became more concerned with current events and began reading lots of newspaper pieces. Around the same time in 2012, I read a pivotal article written by Egyptian-American journalist and feminist Mona El Tahawy “Why do they hate us?“ which addresses misogyny in Islam. It was like being electrified. I wanted to understand more, and so decided to travel to Egypt to get to know the world of these women: their daily routines, their wishes, dreams and concerns. I wanted to know how differences in social position, religion, education, age and class defined the scope of their lives. The reports about the rapes at Tahrir Square in 2012 and 2013 convinced me of the necessity of this plan. Preparing for the series was sometimes tedious and tough. Luckily, I had friends in Cairo who could tell me a lot about the country and who opened up a lot of doors for me. Films and books, news and newspaper reports provided more information on how Egyptian society developed over the last fifty years and how it runs today. When I received the grant from VG Bild Kunst for the project, the whole thing became much more concrete and I could finally plan the trip.
