Motivation: After watching "Roma", the Alfonso Cuarón movie, Lina thought about Cleo, the main character. How she was a part of the family, but not quite. Seeing the large socioeconomics gaps in Egyptian society, Lina was motivated to speak with her friends' housekeepers, especially those who have stayed with the same family for over 5 years - commonplace in Egyptian homes. These women, often downgrading the value of their own labour, are strong and dignified, and actually earn the incomes for their households, hence the name "Breadwinners"
Description
Portrait series of housekeepers. Photos taken in at their workplaces at the consent of their employers. In a patriarchal society where men can expect to control their wives’ career choices and have a final say over all household matters, a woman may go out into the world, find a job as a housekeeper, earn money and support her whole family. However, her power and status at home may not change at all, so she ends up carrying the burden rather than the privilege of being the sole provider.
